Save Money with Cloth Diapers

There are many great reasons to use cloth diapers. If the environmental benefits don't sway you the savings will. Not only are cloth diapers better for our planet, better for your baby, they are even better for your pocket book!

With the tough economic times upon up many families are looking for ways to cut back spending. I took a peak on Amazon.com to check out the going rate of disposable diapers. A box of Size 1 Pampers is $24.69 (not including shipping) which makes each diaper about $0.25. Newborns go through about 12 diapers a day, so a month of diapering with disposables will set you back $88.92! Wow, and that is just one month! Of course you'll need wipes, that will set you back another $12 per month. Not to mention gas used to the store if you don't buy online. That adds up to $100 PER MONTH! This amount will be a little less once baby is older and you are changing less often. Lets guesstimate that older babies will cost $80/ month. Now lets see what the grand total in disposables will set you back ...... $80 x 30 months = $2400 YIKES!

Let's take a look at the cost of cloth diapers. The most economical diapering system would be prefolds and Thirsties Diaper Covers. Just because prefolds are the most econmical don't underestimte their effectiveness. Prefolds are one of my favorite and best selling diaper option. They have many uses beyond diapering and wash up well.

Let's break down the cost from birth to potty learning:
2 dozen Infant prefolds at $22.20/dozen = 44.40
2 dozen Regular prefolds at $30/dozen = 60.00
4 XS Thirsties Covers at 10.75 = 43.00
4 Small Thirsties Covers at 10.75 = 43.00
4 Medium Thirsties Covers at 10.75 = 43.00
2 Pack of Snappis = 4.49
36 cloth wipes = 30.60
Total = $268.09

Looking for the simplest cloth diapering option that will still save you money over disposables? 24 bumGenius One Size Diapers will take you from birth to potty for about $400.00

Add in the washing:
30 months of washing diapers every other day=450 wash loads x $0.80 cents per wash load for water & electricity=$360.00

Grand Total for Disposables $2400
Grand Total for Cloth $628

That is quite a substatial savings! Now go ahead, MAKE THE SWITCH!!

Help Save Handmade Toys in the USA

I adore handmade toys. I am truly worried to think that small businesses and families which make toys will be hit so hard by this and may even be put out of business. When I walk down the toys isles in Target I see row upon row of plastic junk wrapped in more plastic. I love to know that they toys my children play with are made with love, contribute small family owned businesses an more importantly are safe! Don't get me wrong, my daughter loves her Barbies, thanks to Daddy who has a hard time saying no. Please read below to find out how you can help.

*Taken from http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org/*

The issue:
In 2007,
large toy manufacturers who outsource their production to China and other developing countries violated the public's trust. They were selling toys with dangerously high lead content, toys with unsafe small part, toys with improperly secured and easily swallowed small magnets, and toys made from chemicals that made kids sick. Almost every problem toy in 2007 was made in China.

The United States Congress rightly recognized that the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) lacked the authority and staffing to prevent dangerous toys from being imported into the US. So, they passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) in August, 2008. Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in toys, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number.

All of these changes will be fairly easy for large, multinational toy manufacturers to comply with. Large manufacturers who make thousands of units of each toy have very little incremental cost to pay for testing and update their molds to include batch labels.

For small American, Canadian, and European toymakers, however, the costs of mandatroy testing will likely drive them out of business.

  • A toymaker, for example, who makes wooden cars in his garage in Maine to supplement his income cannot afford the $4,000 fee per toy that testing labs are charging to assure compliance with the CPSIA.
  • A work at home mom in Minnesota who makes dolls to sell at craft fairs must choose either to violate the law or cease operations.
  • A small toy retailer in Vermont who imports wooden toys from Europe, which has long had stringent toy safety standards, must now pay for testing on every toy they import.
  • And even the handful of larger toy makers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.

The CPSIA simply forgot to exclude the class of toys that have earned and kept the public's trust: Toys made in the US, Canada, and Europe. The result, unless the law is modified, is that handmade toys will no longer be legal in the US.

If this law had been applied to the food industry, every farmers market in the country would be forced to close while Kraft and Dole prospered.

How You can Help:

Please write to your United States Congress Person and Senator to request changes in the CPSIA to save handmade toys. Use our sample letter or write your own. You can find your Congress Person here and Senator here.

Pass the Tofurky please!

My first Thanksgiving out on my own I tried my hand at preparing my first real Turkey. It couldn't be that hard, everyone does it. Even though I was vegetarian, no one else in the family was and I had not yet discovered the joys of Tofurky. I thought, well Thanksgiving isn't Thanksgiving without a big dead bird, right? Well, it turns out that the whole preparation of a Turkey is pretty nasty! You have to thaw this dead bird in your sink for hours (of course I had no idea I was supposed to thaw it in the fridge days ago.) Then you remove the wrapper and try to handle the slippery, big ole bird and stick your hand up it's butt to pull out a bag of guts. Then do it again to fill the cavity with stuffing. The Turkey "cooking" didn't go so well either. Still partly frozen, that bird was fully done cooking long after the guests had had their pumpkin pie.

So no more turkeys allowed at my house! Even though I am outnumbered in the vegetarian field, I could care less :) Tofurky is easy to cook, find, and delicious. Thankfully Tofurky has been a part of my Thanksgiving for years now.

Did you know that 300 million turkeys raised and killed for their flesh each year in the US!

Lucky for you, me, and the turkeys, there are lots of alternatives available, including one of my favorites, Tofurky!

Here are my top five reasons you should eat a Tofurky this year:

  • No animal was tortured in the making of a Tofurky.
  • No one has to stick her/his hand up a turkey's butt. Tofurkys don't have butts.
  • Murder should never be cause for celebration.
  • Tofurky roasts are available practically everywhere. Seriously, check this out.
  • Turkeys will be thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Diaper Withdrawal

Crazy as it may sound, I am going through diaper withdrawal. Jackson decided that he no longer wants to be in diapers. At 17 months he is very strong willed and learned to use the potty over the course of this last weekend, with only one accident. It is nice to not have to fight and chase him down to change his diaper but I am feeling a bit saddened. I guess it is another step toward becoming a big boy...his baby stage is slipping away. I have only done one load of diaper laundry in the past 4 days and it was only half full. No more folding and stacking, which may sound crazy but I find washing diapers quite satisfying. I have a diaper that he has yet to even try on, a beautiful WAHM embroidered piece. No more diaper "stalking" for the the diaper to complete the stash. And wool, oh how I will miss wool....

I love Hemp!

"Do the hemp hop, do the hemp hop. It's not dope it's rope! It's not dope it's rope!"

This past weekend I exhibited at the San Francisco Green Festival. My booth was in the Green Kids Zone so I was able to catch glimpses of the presentations and my daughter was able to take part in the activities. There was a fabulous puppet show about the benefits of hemp. I got a kick of it and was able to break away to snap a picture. I have had the song "it's not dope, it's rope" stuck in my head ever since. Liana didn't quite get it and asked me where the princesses were hahah.

Hemp makes great cloth diapers and pocket diaper inserts, very trim yet absorbent and hemp is better for our planet.

Hemp was nce deemed an indispensable commodity in the global market, it was replaced by a multitude of synthetic fibers by the mid-1900s, when it fell out of favor in the United States because of its relation to marijuana. But, while industrial hemp does belong to the same species as marijuana, it is a different variety with a very low THC content. Smoking hemp will definitely not give you a high, though it will give you a headache.

Did you know that each conventional cotton t-shirt requires:

• 1/3lb of pesticide to grow.

• 1740 gallons of water to grow the cotton for one t-shirt! That's enough drinking water for 3 years!

• Bleaching which produces deadly dioxins that have polluted countless waterways and is a highly toxic cancer-causing agent. Hemp production does not require pesticides, bleach or very much water. Hemp is one of the fastest growing plants and replenishes the soil it is planted in.

New New New!!

AHHHH Goodmamas!!

Silky soft, squishy goodness! Fabulous Prints and Velours!

If you are not familiar with Goodmamas, they are a one-size fitted diaper made of the silkiest bamboo velour. You can't help but "pet" this fabulous diaper! Goodmamas have quite
a cult following. Many a mamas have stalked the goodmama site waiting for diapers to stock (yes, I too am guilty!) You can now get your hands on one of these beauties stalk-free :)

The Better for Babies line of Little Beetle fitteds, wool covers, training pants, and wool wetbags are now in-stock. Nothing but pure, organic, natural fibers. Looking for the absolute in natural diapering? Look no further! Fun colors and their super soft organic wool can't be beat. If you have not tried wool, you are missing out. I owe my love and obsession with wool to Better for Babies!

Scootababy Baby Carrier

I absolutely LOVE my Scootababy! This is hands down the easiest and most comfortable baby carrier I have tried. The Scootababy mimics the natural way you carry your baby. Simply snap the waist buckle, add baby, pull the shoulder strap over your head, adjust and you are done! It really is simple and comfortable.

I had the joy of discovering the Scootababy at a baby trade show this summer. My 16 moth old was particularly fussy and wanted nothing to do with the stroller. I ran into the makers of Scootababy and tried one on, it has been LOVE ever since. My son is at the stage where he is too tall to be worn in a front pack and I find it too difficult to get him in a back carrier. The Scootababy is super comfortable and a breeze to get on!

Reusable diapers better for the environment - it’s official!

It is obvious that reusable cloth diapers are better for the environment than disposables, right? Well, a study done back in 2005 determined that the washing and drying of cloth diapers gave cloth diapers a larger carbon footprint than disposable diapers. I personally found this study to be skewed. The calculations were based on commercial washing and drying which is done at a higher heat and uses more energy. Many families who cloth diaper launder their own diapers and many even use HE washing machines. Modern cloth diapers also have a much shorter drying time and use less water. The study also fails to address the landfill issues of disposable diapers. Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste (Link, Ann. Disposable nappies: a case study in waste prevention. April 2003. Women's Environmental Network.) Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp (Armstrong, Liz and Adrienne Scott Whitewash: Exposing the Health and Environmental Dangers of Women's Sanitary Products and Disposable Diapers, What You Can Do About It. 1993. HarperCollins.)

The latest report by the Environment Agency confirms that reusable cloth diapers, if used and laundered according to manufacturer’s guidelines, can reduce the global warming impact of using reusable diapers over disposables by an incredible 40%.* Reusable cloth diapers, if used in an environmentally responsible way, create significantly less environmental impact than disposable diapers. The new report is an update of the Environment Agency’s initial report on the life cycle assessment study for disposable and reusable diapers, which was released in May 2005. The much criticised 2005 report seemed to conclude that there was no significant difference between the environmental impacts of disposable and reusable nappies. Guy Schanschieff, MD of Bambino Mio, Europe’s leading reusable nappy brand and Chair of the UK Nappy Alliance said: “I am delighted that this update has been published to correct the misunderstanding created by the initial report. It confirms that responsible use of reusable nappies would reduce the modern parent’s environmental impact. Many people questioned the 2005 report and this led to the government commissioning this latest update. Reusable nappies are not only better for the environment, as confirmed by this report, but can save parents considerable amounts of money, which is particularly resonant in the present economic climate.” Defra’s findings have apparently been contradicted in the Sunday Times, who have latched on to the report’s findings regarding laundry habits. They state that if parents used tumble dryers and washed the nappies at 90oC the carbon impact could ‘spiral to 993kg of CO2.’ However, most parents wash at more sensible temperatures! * An updated Lifecycle Assessment Study for Disposable and Reusable Nappies, published 17/10/08. Copies of the latest report are available from www.defra.gov.uk

I *heart* the new BG Colors!

They are beautiful! I especially love Zinnia. It's funny, I don't usually care for pink. The new bright colors coordinate beautifully with the pastels. I first saw the new colors when they were introduced at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas last month. I couldn't help but squeal and then drool over them. They are quite beautiful in person. I really am a little diaper crazy, just a little, I admit it. :) Be sure to check out the new colors. They are in stock and waiting patiently for new homes. And if I forgot to mention, I am giving away a free wetbag with 12 or more diapers!

New & Improved Knickernappi's 2G

The Knickernappies 2G have been released and are in stock! This is one fabulous diaper! The side snaps makes it very trim and I love the clean look.

A few minor changes have been made which have made a big change in performance. The biggest change is to the area between the legs. The crotch is a little wider to make them easier to stuff and to provide even better leak protection. For size medium and large, this is the only change. Testers say it has the same fit they've loved but makes it much easier to stuff, especially for dads with larger hands.

Size small now has a 1" longer rise. Many babies were growing out of smalls before they were fitting into mediums, creating a sizing gap. This gap has been closed and the size chart for smalls is a tad different.

Every Knickernappies 2G comes with a free Banana Peels Diapers Microfiber Insert! Got a heavy wetter on your hands (as do I!) the SuperDo is one powerful insert! Both the SuperDo and LoopyDo are the top-rated inserts on DiaperPin for a reason!

Hip, Hip, Horray for Happy Tushies!

Most of the time when I leave the house I don't feel like carrying much. I usually throw a few diapers into a wetbag along with some wipes. The thing is, when one diaper is soiled it gets mixed up with the clean diaper, not good! Happy Tushies has solved this with a fabulous wetbag called the Wonderbag! The Wonderbag has two compartments that snap together to fit the same as a regular wetbag in your diaper bag, Also features a snap tab handle to hang off your stroller bars or what have you. One side for clean, one for dirty, problem solved :) And don't forget a matching changing pad.

Happy Tushies also makes mama pad bags. The same design as the wonderbags just scaled down a bit to fit in your purse.

Clovers??

For those of you that are wondering exactly what a Clover is ... Clovers are fluffy soft fitted diapers made of organic cotton velour. They come in a variety of fun surging and snap colors. Clovers are side snapping which cuts down on bulk, which I love. What makes them so special is that the elastic can be easily adjusted for the perfect fit! There is an access slot on the inside of the diaper to perform future repairs, elastic replacements and elastic adjustments.

Pair an Organic Clover with a wool diaper cover for the ultimate in natural diapering!

Did I mention that all Clover Diapers carry a LIFELONG warranty! NO other diaper out there can make that claim. Even if you pass down the diaper, the warranty still applies.

Be sure to check out their prefolds and doublers made of the same luxuriously soft organic cotton!

Matthew McConaughey Uses Fuzzi Bunz

Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves Personally Thank FuzziBunz for Baby Levi’s New Cloth Diaper Stash

Levi Alves McConaughey may be the next Hollywood baby in cloth diapers

LAFAYETTE, La., September 9, 2008 – When baby Levi was born to proud parents, Matthew McConaughey and Camilla Alves, Mother of Eden, the makers of the patented FuzziBunz pocket-style cloth diapers, in collaboration with BopStarBaby, a celebrity gifting company, sent the McConaughey family a starter set of FuzziBunz cloth diapers.

Fast forward several weeks: the McConaughey clan sent a personal thank you note to Mother of Eden founder and FuzziBunz inventor, Tereson Dupuy. The note acknowledged the great history behind FuzziBunz diapers and thanked Dupuy for the blue, turquoise and green diapers she sent.

“We feel it’s important to encourage all families – celebrities or not – to make eco-friendly choices when raising their new baby,” says Dupuy. “We are honored that Levi Alves McConaughey may just be the next celebrity baby to make the important fashion statement that green is good!”

The McConaughey’s join a group of eco-minded celebrity parents known to be using FuzziBunz cloth diapers including Tori Spelling, Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams, Anna Belknap (CSI NY), and Diana Farr (Numb$rs). It has also been widely-reported that Dave Matthews, Madonna and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s babies use cloth diapers too.

Natural Teethers and Binkies from Natursutten

Teething....just the thought gives me nightmares! I remember with Liana, our first, we had just gotten settled in to the whole parenting routine, no more screaming colicy nights, everything seemed to be going smoothly AND BAM teething hit us! Oh boy! It seemed as though after each tooth finally broke through another was making it's torturous entrance. We purchased every squishy teether we could find, and they were probably chock full of BPA. When Jackson started teething I bought only wooden teething toys but I have to wonder, what baby wants to teeth on wood? He sure did not. Thanks to Natursutten teething can be a *tad* less stressful :) Their natural teethers are fre of BPA-A, phthalates and any chemical softeners.

Natursutten also makes fabulous BPA free pacifiers (or binkies as we call them around here) that are made from pure, natural rubber. Available in orthdontic and round.

"Cotton" Balls to fall in LOVE with!

I love all things WAHM made :) I am constantly perusing hyena cart and etsy looking for a great handmade find. I stumbled across Homemade Mama on my search for bamboo mama pads and discovered her fabulous "Cotton" Balls (which are really made from bamboo velour). What a great idea! Before I discovered these beauties I used a cotton ball to apply toner on my face, then into the garbage it would go. I really hate one-time use items and it honestly never occurred to me that there was another option. These little bamboo velour rounds are super soft and cute too! After I use one, I toss it a mesh bag and then into the washer. They add a little luxury to make my nighttime ritual!

2 thumbs up for the thinkbaby Sippy Cup

Once Jackson turned 1 I realized that it was time to move on to a sippy cup. I tried a few different sippy's but he didn't care for the hard spout. He would open the bottle drawer, bring me a bottle and make his little "eh eh eh" meaning, of course, I want! I stumbled across the thinkbaby sippy late one night and bought 2. When they arrived I washed them up quick and handed it to him. I don't think he has put it down since! I am really glad I bought 2 at the time because my oldest was jealous and had to have one of her own. Heaven forbid when both sippys are in the dishwasher! Best of all these sippy cups are BPA Free and Toxin Free :) LOVE THEM!

Cloth Diapers Going Mainstream

If you happen to be in Target wandering up and down the baby isles and happen to notice a familiar item, your eyes are not playing tricks on you, YES .......................it is a CLOTH DIAPER!!! Not a gerber flat or prefold diaper a BUMGENIUS 3.0! This is a huge step toward bringing cloth diapers into the mainstream. There are actually people out there that believe the cloth diapers still involve pins and rubber pants. Once they see how cute and easy modern cloth diapers are I am sure they will be hooked. Watch out Huggies!!! So next time you are in Target make a comment that you are happy to finally see bumGenius available! Support cloth diapers going mainstream :)

No more Toxic Baby Bottles!

Recently, I have been doing a lot of reading about BPA in plastics and the effects they have on our children. My daughter never took a bottle as a baby (quite strong willed since birth) , my son rarely did and I used mostly glass bottles. Now that he is 14 months old and loves to run around the house with his bottle I no longer feel comfortable using glass bottles. I started a mission to find safe, BPA free baby bottles and became side-tracked by all the shocking studies. I recently read a study on bottles entitled "Toxic Baby Bottles" written by the Environment California Research and & Policy Center.

"Extensive scientific literature reports adverse health
effects from bisphenol A at very low doses. Studies show
that bisphenol A can alter the expression of several
hundred genes with effects varying among specific tissues
and depending upon the timing of exposure. More
than 150 laboratory animal studies suggest that bisphenol
A exposure at very low doses is linked to a staggering
number of health problems, including prostate and breast
cancer, obesity, hyperactivity, diabetes, altered immune
system, lowered sperm count, and early puberty."

"...growing children
are particularly at risk from bisphenol
A exposure and because adverse effects
on intellectual ability, social behaviors,
fertility, and potential for disease may
take decades to detect, measures must
be taken to protect children from exposure
to products containing bisphenol A
that they use every day.
Even after birth, children’s bodies remain
immature with underdeveloped
detoxification mechanisms to protect
them from toxic chemicals. Children’s
brains and other organ systems are constantly
developing, undergoing periods
of particular sensitivity to damage or
disruption."
I have found a few great makers of BPA-free baby bottles and sippy cups from Green to Grow, ThinkBaby, and Klean Kanteen . So get rid of your old baby bottles now!

Nighttime Cloth Diapering with no leaks?! It CAN be done!

One of the most common questions I get is about nighttime diapering. Many families who use cloth during the day resort to disposables at night because they are afraid of leaks or have not found the right solution. With most babies spending 12 hours asleep, hopefully straight through :) , you don't want that time to be in a chemical laden disposable. Cloth at night is totally doable! Every baby is different and yes it can take some trial an error but it is worth it.

My favorite solution...Wool! If you have not tried wool before, you must! It really is natures miracle fiber! Many people think that wool is hard to care for but it really is not. Wool is self cleaning so you only need to hand wash it about every other week. Wool does need to be lanolized about once a month . This is also simple because there are lanolin sprays that make it super easy. Since wool is a natural, breathable it keeps baby comfortable at night.

For the average wetter a pocket diaper with an extra insert or doubler works fine. The bumGenius with both inserts (one-size insert & newborn insert) is a popular choice. Or try a Knickernappies SuperDo, these are workhorse inserts! An awesome combo of microfiber and hemp make this insert super absorbent. For heavy wetters I suggest the Baby BeeHinds Bamboo Fitted Diaper with the Baby BeeHinds Wool Cover. The combination is bullletproof and has never let me down.

I'm a Plumber!

We'll not really, actually far from it but I was able to install the bumGenius Diaper Sprayer in 5 minutes flat! I am very proud of myself :) I have to show off my handy work...yes, this is the first picture of a toilet I have ever taken:
Being in the cloth diaper business (and a mom) has pretty much desensitized me to poo and poo related issues so this might be a little TMI for some...but my son has the worst stickiest poo! It has been really hard to get it off his diapers! I guess it is all the fruit he eats and that he is still nursing. To top it off it go goes several times a day, so last night I thought "hey DIAPER SPRAYER DUH!" So I went for it and hooked up that bad boy and tested the water pressure. I have found that the medium strength spray works the best. Too much pressure sprays water on the seat and low flow doesn' t cut it. Once I got a hang of it I was impressed! This is one of those things that I wonder how I went so long without!

The bumGenius Diaper Sprayer has been a hot seller for a while and I have always meant to try one out. You'd think that after 3 years of cloth diapering I would have tried it sooner. There was just something so intimidating about it. If you are like me and a little eeked out by it I say go for it! It really is E.A.S.Y!

*UPDATE* Diaper Sprayers SOLD OUT, don't worry they will be back in stock soon!*
