My diapers have never been so soft, and white. and the ammonia smell is almost TOTALLY gone! I've never been so happy while cloth diapering!! :)

ABC Kids 09 New Product Sneak Peek!

All of the above will be stocked on 9/28.

Rumparooz - Little Joey Newborn All in One Diapers These diapers are too stinkin cute! They fit perfectly when most other diapers overwhelm newborns. Below is a picture of my 7lb 14oz nephew in a lil joey AIO. Rumparooz also introduced a new color: Root Beer! Scheduled to stock the last week of September.

Better for Babies launched a new product line called Better for Grown Ups. I am super exited about these products! Reusable and refillable organic cotton tissues and Facial rounds. I've been using face rounds for a year now and love them. No more wasting cotton balls! We will also be carrying the Little Beetle One Size Wool Covers in COLORS!

Kissaluvs - So many great new products from Kissaluvs! Marvels One Size AIO: A PUL outer combined with a moisture wicking fleece inner and a microfiber soaker comprise the basic layers. The diaper snaps down to make the rise smaller and will fit babies 7-35 pounds. This diaper does something no other diaper on the market does. When you toss the diaper into your washing machine it will turn inside-out to get a thorough cleaning and dry in a jiffy! Kissaluv's patent pending design has the soaker sewn in the front of the diaper in a way that the diaper will turn itself inside out in the wash. And the soaker will still be attached so you’ll never have to hunt it down in your machine and never have to stuff another diaper again! So no stuffing AND fast dry time! These are scheduled to arrive at the end of October. I also got a sneak peak of the fabulous wool diaper covers and embellished Indian Prefolds. The wool is cashmere soft, yummy! Kissaluvs will also be offering prefolds embellished in fun designer prints.

Blueberry - New Limited Edition Trainers and Blueberry Minky One Size Prints YEAH! Scheduled to arrive the first week of October.

Cotton Babies launched two new lines: Flip and Econobum. The Flip diapering system offers three different inserts: Stay-Dry, Organic, and Disposable. Simply wash the insert when soiled and replace with a clean one. The cover is very similar to the bumGenius Organic One Size with snaps and seems to have the same cut. I love the fit of the bumGenius Organic and can't wait to try out Flip!

Econobum consists of a no frills one size cover and one size prefold. Simple and economical at only $9.95.

Planet Wise - New limited edition Planet Wise wetbag print in "Mocha Sunrise" I don't have a preview of the print to show you, but trust me - it is fabulous! Planet Wise is also coming out with a small wipe sized wetbag in pink dots and blue dots. Each wetbag will include 12 flannel wipes measuring 8x8. They fold in half to fit perfectly in the wetbag. Now you can bring your cloth wipes with you with no leaking or wicking!

LolliDoo - The newest addition to Banana Peels is Lollidoo. I am so exited about this diaper! We will be carrying the Eco Fleece Nighttime Pockets. Cloth Diaper Delimas - HE Washers

For those of you that have an HE or front loader washing machine you know how great they are for the environment and saving water. It is ironic that they are not so good at getting cloth diapers clean. Diapers need a lot of water to slosh around in. I never had an issue with stinkies until I upgraded to an HE machine. I actually miss my top loader for diaper loads.

If you ever peek into your washer mid-cycle you will notice that there is hardly any water. Diapers absorb the majority of the wash water. Also, HE washers determine the water level by the weight of the load. Since diapers are lighter even less water is used. Your diapers end up rolling around with barely any water.

If you have an HE washer that allows you to customize the amount of water the washer uses, you are lucky! My washer has no such option :(

So I simply add a bit more to the washer.

Do a prewash/ rinse cycle first. This is important to remove any solid waste that may be left on the diapers. Then start your wash load as normal. When the washer is done filling I add about 2 pots of hot water to the load. Always follow with an extra rinse at the end of the cycle.

Now the water level is where is should be, right up to the bottom of the drum. Not too much water but just enough. The diapers now have a sufficient amount of water to agitate.

I believe in keeping it simple. This process may seem like a pain but it is so much easier than constant stripping, soaking, unnecessary sanitary cycles, additives, boiling, etc.

This process may not be for everyone, but it has been a LIFESAVER and a time saver for me :)

SposoEasy Diaper Review

I love trying new diapers, it is my business so I have an excuse :) I am extremely critical when it comes to diapers. Give me a diaper and I will analyze the heck out of it.

There has been a lot of buzz about the SposoEasy so I just had to give it a try. I am an absolute fan of natural fibers. Cotton washes up beautifully. No stripping, no build-up and no stinkies like man-made petroleum fibers have a tendency to do. The best part of the SposoEasy? It is easy..daddy easy. Sposo = husband.

When I first opened the package I was shocked how trim it was. The SposoEasy is extremely trim. Could a diaper that is so trim be absorbent? We will see....

As seen here there is no leg casing which can lead red marks on baby's cute little or chubby :) legs.

The interior consists of a cotton flannel backed with cotton loop terry.

The diaper seemed flat upon arrival but once washed it fluffed up beautifully! And dried almost as fast as my pocket diapers, unheard of for all-in-one diapers!

The laundry tabs are ingenious. My biggest complaint with aplix is the curling which is caused by washing and drying. I have to say that I do not like aplix at all because of the curling, lint collecting and diaper snakes. These hidden wash tab solves that! LOVE them! The SposoEasy is the only aplix diaper allowed my my stash.

Once fastened, the aplix tabs are completely hidden and ready to be washed!

Here is a medium SposoEasy on my 19 month, 25lb son. PLENTY of room to grow! The SposoEasy sizing is different that other diaper brand that you may be accustomed to. They run large!

Great fit around the legs which is extremely important!

Look how trim it is! Love this dipe!

Verdict: I LOVE this diaper! Great fit, super trim, dries fast. Everything I could ask for in a diaper!

My husband "helped out" last night by getting Jackson ready for bed, nighttime diaper and all. Let me just say that I am very particular about the nighttime diaper routine. Well, my dear husband grabbed a SpsosEasy off the top of the diaper stack and put it on him. I was busy getting my daughter ready, came downstairs and Jackson was asleep. My first reaction was "what diaper is he in? is he wearing a wool cover" Nope, he was in a Sposo. Well, I was not going to wake him just to swap out his diaper. Fast forward 12 hours: I knew I would have wet sheets and jammies to wash.....well, he was DRY, bed was DRY too! Not one single leak! The inside was completely saturated. One truly amazing diaper!

Save Money with Cloth Diapers

There are many great reasons to use cloth diapers. If the environmental benefits don't sway you the savings will. Not only are cloth diapers better for our planet, better for your baby, they are even better for your pocket book!

With the tough economic times upon up many families are looking for ways to cut back spending. I took a peak on Amazon.com to check out the going rate of disposable diapers. A box of Size 1 Pampers is $24.69 (not including shipping) which makes each diaper about $0.25. Newborns go through about 12 diapers a day, so a month of diapering with disposables will set you back $88.92! Wow, and that is just one month! Of course you'll need wipes, that will set you back another $12 per month. Not to mention gas used to the store if you don't buy online. That adds up to $100 PER MONTH! This amount will be a little less once baby is older and you are changing less often. Lets guesstimate that older babies will cost $80/ month. Now lets see what the grand total in disposables will set you back ...... $80 x 30 months = $2400 YIKES!

Let's take a look at the cost of cloth diapers. The most economical diapering system would be prefolds and Thirsties Diaper Covers. Just because prefolds are the most econmical don't underestimte their effectiveness. Prefolds are one of my favorite and best selling diaper option. They have many uses beyond diapering and wash up well.

Help Save Handmade Toys in the USA

I adore handmade toys. I am truly worried to think that small businesses and families which make toys will be hit so hard by this and may even be put out of business. When I walk down the toys isles in Target I see row upon row of plastic junk wrapped in more plastic. I love to know that they toys my children play with are made with love, contribute small family owned businesses an more importantly are safe! Don't get me wrong, my daughter loves her Barbies, thanks to Daddy who has a hard time saying no. Please read below to find out how you can help.

The issue:
In 2007, large toy manufacturers who outsource their production to China and other developing countries violated the public's trust. They were selling toys with dangerously high lead content, toys with unsafe small part, toys with improperly secured and easily swallowed small magnets, and toys made from chemicals that made kids sick. Almost every problem toy in 2007 was made in China.

The United States Congress rightly recognized that the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) lacked the authority and staffing to prevent dangerous toys from being imported into the US. So, they passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) in August, 2008. Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in toys, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number.

All of these changes will be fairly easy for large, multinational toy manufacturers to comply with. Large manufacturers who make thousands of units of each toy have very little incremental cost to pay for testing and update their molds to include batch labels.

For small American, Canadian, and European toymakers, however, the costs of mandatroy testing will likely drive them out of business.

A toymaker, for example, who makes wooden cars in his garage in Maine to supplement his income cannot afford the $4,000 fee per toy that testing labs are charging to assure compliance with the CPSIA.
A work at home mom in Minnesota who makes dolls to sell at craft fairs must choose either to violate the law or cease operations.
A small toy retailer in Vermont who imports wooden toys from Europe, which has long had stringent toy safety standards, must now pay for testing on every toy they import.
And even the handful of larger toy makers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.

The CPSIA simply forgot to exclude the class of toys that have earned and kept the public's trust: Toys made in the US, Canada, and Europe. The result, unless the law is modified, is that handmade toys will no longer be legal in the US.

If this law had been applied to the food industry, every farmers market in the country would be forced to close while Kraft and Dole prospered.

Pass the Tofurky please!

My first Thanksgiving out on my own I tried my hand at preparing my first real Turkey. It couldn't be that hard, everyone does it. Even though I was vegetarian, no one else in the family was and I had not yet discovered the joys of Tofurky. I thought, well Thanksgiving isn't Thanksgiving without a big dead bird, right? Well, it turns out that the whole preparation of a Turkey is pretty nasty! You have to thaw this dead bird in your sink for hours (of course I had no idea I was supposed to thaw it in the fridge days ago.) Then you remove the wrapper and try to handle the slippery, big ole bird and stick your hand up it's butt to pull out a bag of guts. Then do it again to fill the cavity with stuffing. The Turkey "cooking" didn't go so well either. Still partly frozen, that bird was fully done cooking long after the guests had had their pumpkin pie.

So no more turkeys allowed at my house! Even though I am outnumbered in the vegetarian field, I could care less :) Tofurky is easy to cook, find, and delicious. Thankfully Tofurky has been a part of my Thanksgiving for years now.

Diaper Withdrawal

Crazy as it may sound, I am going through diaper withdrawal. Jackson decided that he no longer wants to be in diapers. At 17 months he is very strong willed and learned to use the potty over the course of this last weekend, with only one accident. It is nice to not have to fight and chase him down to change his diaper but I am feeling a bit saddened. I guess it is another step toward becoming a big boy...his baby stage is slipping away. I have only done one load of diaper laundry in the past 4 days and it was only half full. No more folding and stacking, which may sound crazy but I find washing diapers quite satisfying. I have a diaper that he has yet to even try on, a beautiful WAHM embroidered piece. No more diaper "stalking" for the the diaper to complete the stash. And wool, oh how I will miss wool....

I love Hemp!

This past weekend I exhibited at the San Francisco Green Festival. My booth was in the Green Kids Zone so I was able to catch glimpses of the presentations and my daughter was able to take part in the activities. There was a fabulous puppet show about the benefits of hemp. I got a kick of it and was able to break away to snap a picture. I have had the song "it's not dope, it's rope" stuck in my head ever since. Liana didn't quite get it and asked me where the princesses were hahah.

Hemp makes great cloth diapers and pocket diaper inserts, very trim yet absorbent and hemp is better for our planet.

Hemp was nce deemed an indispensable commodity in the global market, it was replaced by a multitude of synthetic fibers by the mid-1900s, when it fell out of favor in the United States because of its relation to marijuana. But, while industrial hemp does belong to the same species as marijuana, it is a different variety with a very low THC content. It is obvious that reusable cloth diapers are better for the environment than disposables, right? Well, a study done back in 2005 determined that the washing and drying of cloth diapers gave cloth diapers a larger carbon footprint than disposable diapers. I personally found this study to be skewed. The calculations were based on commercial washing and drying which is done at a higher heat and uses more energy. Many families who cloth diaper launder their own diapers and many even use HE washing machines. Modern cloth diapers also have a much shorter drying time and use less water. The study also fails to address the landfill issues of disposable diapers. Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste (Link, Ann. Disposable nappies: a case study in waste prevention. April 2003. Women's Environmental Network.) Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp (Armstrong, Liz and Adrienne Scott Whitewash: Exposing the Health and Environmental Dangers of Women's Sanitary Products and Disposable Diapers, What You Can Do About It. 1993. HarperCollins.)

The latest report by the Environment Agency confirms that reusable cloth diapers, if used and laundered according to manufacturer’s guidelines, can reduce the global warming impact of using reusable diapers over disposables by an incredible 40%.* Reusable cloth diapers, if used in an environmentally responsible way, create significantly less environmental impact than disposable diapers. The new report is an update of the Environment Agency’s initial report on the life cycle assessment study for disposable and reusable diapers, which was released in May 2005. The much criticised 2005 report seemed to conclude that there was no significant difference between the environmental impacts of disposable and reusable nappies. Guy Schanschieff, MD of Bambino Mio, Europe’s leading reusable nappy brand and Chair of the UK Nappy Alliance said: “I am delighted that this update has been published to correct the misunderstanding created by the initial report. It confirms that responsible use of reusable nappies would reduce the modern parent’s environmental impact. Many people questioned the 2005 report and this led to the government commissioning this latest update. Reusable nappies are not only better for the environment, as confirmed by this report, but can save parents considerable amounts of money, which is particularly resonant in the present economic climate.” Defra’s findings have apparently been contradicted in the Sunday Times, who have latched on to the report’s findings regarding laundry habits. They are beautiful! I especially love Zinnia. It's funny, I don't usually care for pink. The new bright colors coordinate beautifully with the pastels. I first saw the new colors when they were introduced at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas last month. I couldn't help but squeal and then drool over them. They are quite beautiful in person. The Knickernappies 2G have been released and are in stock! This is one fabulous diaper! The side snaps makes it very trim and I love the clean look.

A few minor changes have been made which have made a big change in performance. The biggest change is to the area between the legs. The crotch is a little wider to make them easier to stuff and to provide even better leak protection. For size medium and large, this is the only change. Testers say it has the same fit they've loved but makes it much easier to stuff, especially for dads with larger hands.

Size small now has a 1" longer rise. Many babies were growing out of smalls before they were fitting into mediums, creating a sizing gap. This gap has been closed and the size chart for smalls is a tad different.

Most of the time when I leave the house I don't feel like carrying much. I usually throw a few diapers into a wetbag along with some wipes. I love all things WAHM made :) I am constantly perusing hyena cart and etsy looking for a great handmade find. I stumbled across Homemade Mama on my search for bamboo mama pads and discovered her fabulous "Cotton" Balls (which are really made from bamboo velour). What a great idea! Before I discovered these beauties I used a cotton ball to apply toner on my face, then into the garbage it would go. I really hate one-time use items and it honestly never occurred to me that there was another option. These little bamboo velour rounds are super soft and cute too! After I use one, I toss it a mesh bag and then into the washer. They add a little luxury to make my nighttime ritual!

Once Jackson turned 1 I realized that it was time to move on to a sippy cup. I tried a few different sippy's but he didn't care for the hard spout. He would open the bottle drawer, bring me a bottle and make his little "eh eh eh" meaning, of course, I want! I stumbled across the thinkbaby sippy late one night and bought 2. When they arrived I washed them up quick and handed it to him. I don't think he has put it down since! Recently, I have been doing a lot of reading about BPA in plastics and the effects they have on our children. My daughter never took a bottle as a baby (quite strong willed since birth) , my son rarely did and I used mostly glass bottles. Now that he is 14 months old and loves to run around the house with his bottle I no longer feel comfortable using glass bottles. I started a mission to find safe, BPA free baby bottles and became side-tracked by all the shocking studies. I recently read a study on bottles entitled "Toxic Baby Bottles" written by the Environment California Research and & Policy Center.

"Extensive scientific literature reports adverse health
effects from bisphenol A at very low doses. Studies show
that bisphenol A can alter the expression of several
hundred genes with effects varying among specific tissues
and depending upon the timing of exposure. More
than 150 laboratory animal studies suggest that bisphenol
A exposure at very low doses is linked to a staggering
number of health problems, including prostate and breast
cancer, obesity, hyperactivity, diabetes, altered immune
system, lowered sperm count, and early puberty."

are particularly at risk from bisphenol
A exposure and because adverse effects
on intellectual ability, social behaviors,
fertility, and potential for disease may
take decades to detect, measures must
be taken to protect children from exposure
to products containing bisphenol A

Nighttime Cloth Diapering with no leaks?! It CAN be done!

One of the most common questions I get is about nighttime diapering. Many families who use cloth during the day resort to disposables at night because they are afraid of leaks or have not found the right solution. With most babies spending 12 hours asleep, hopefully straight through :) , you don't want that time to be in a chemical laden disposable. Cloth at night is totally doable! Every baby is different and yes it can take some trial an error but it is worth it.

My favorite solution...Wool! If you have not tried wool before, you must! It really is natures miracle fiber! Many people think that wool is hard to care for but it really is not. Wool is self cleaning so you only need to hand wash it about every other week. Wool does need to be lanolized about once a month . This is also simple because there are lanolin sprays that make it super easy. Since wool is a natural, breathable it keeps baby comfortable at night.

For the average wetter a pocket diaper with an extra insert or doubler works fine. The bumGenius with both inserts (one-size insert & newborn insert) is a popular choice. Being in the cloth diaper business (and a mom) has pretty much desensitized me to poo and poo related issues so this might be a little TMI for some...but my son has the worst stickiest poo! To top it off it go goes several times a day, so last night I thought "hey DIAPER SPRAYER DUH!" So I went for it and hooked up that bad boy and tested the water pressure. I have found that the medium strength spray works the best. Too much pressure sprays water on the seat and low flow doesn' t cut it. Once I got a hang of it I was impressed! This is one of those things that I wonder how I went so long without!

Yummy "Pink Sugar" for your Wool!!

Foaming wool wash and lanolin by Sheepish Grins is now available in delicious Pink Sugar Scent! This smells good enough to eat. It reminds me of cotton candy and yummy sweet sugar cookies.

The Foaming wool wash is super simple to use, just add a few pumps in a sink of lukewarm water with your covers, wash, rinse then follow with a lanolin product if needed. The Sheepish Grins Liquid Lanolin and Spray Lanolin are also available in the same lovely scent. I always add a few spritzes of the spray lanolin to the inside "wet zone" where he pees the most, this keeps my covers bulletproof and night worthy!

Call me crazy but I actually enjoy washing and lanolizing Jackson's wool covers and shorties. Sheepish Grins makes my weekly ritual a little bit more fun!

We are back from Disneyland! We saw every Princess there was so see, got some sun and a lot of exercise!

Many people ask "How do you travel and continue to use cloth diapers?" It is EASY as long as you don't mind an extra suitcase. I brought along pretty much my whole stash which included fitteds, wool soakers, pocket diapers, aio's, doublers for night, wipes, a wetbag, and my hanging pail, oh, I amost forgot a Monkey Doodlez Swim Diaper for Jackson's first swim! A lot, I know, but I really couldn't imagine NOT bringing my (I mean Jackson's) diapers. It has been years since I used disposables, why give in now:) This may sound crazy but I actually hand washed a few while at the hotel. Jackson LOVES to poop in his Goodmamas and there was NO way I could let that sit for 2 days until we got home. I really do love my diapers, I told you I am obsessed! When we got back I simply did 2 loads and let them soak.

RME - I give up!!

Unfortunately, I have been forced to make the decision to no longer accept Revolution Money Exchange as a form of payment.

I am removing RME as a payment option entirely due to:

The time and costs that I have incured as a result of the problems with RME;
But in particular as a result of the inconvenience it causes to you my wonderful customers

Many of you are aware of the issues I have had with RME. 2 weeks ago I was not able to receive funds from customers. I spent quite a while with RME trying to resolve the glitch and if was eventually fixed 2 days later. Well, now I am having the EXACT SAME problem again. I wasted 2 hours of my evening last night making multiple calls and talking to multiple representatives to get a bunch of EXCUSES as to why I am not able to accept funds. While we know that all services can experience “bumps” from time-to-time, there is no excuse their lack of service or knowledge. The first answer I was given was that apparently I don't know the difference between the "cancel" and "accept" button!! It is not only myself as a business owner but also customers that have experienced problems with their accounts and this horrible lack of customer care.

The apparent absence of concern or interest from RME with regard to this issue has severely damaged the reputation of this company in my eyes.

STILL not functioning properly. RME now haunts me even in my sleep, and I don't get much of that! I have been having RME nightmares, seriously lol. Well, if I look on the bright side I have been able to plow through shipping. You should have seen the look on my postman's face yesterday when he saw the bins of packages :) I have not been sending out individual shipment emails. You can see if your order has been shipped by checking your account on the site. I pretty much have all of the paid orders out except for about 4 (YEAH!) that I will get out today.

I was on the phone with RME last night for quite a while trying to get things resolved. They said I had been very popular :) My guess is that the huge influx of orders caused my acount to crash. They are working on fixing the problem so that I can receive funds. In the mean time I was told not to accept funds. This should be resolved very soon. Please bear with me. This is not fun for me either! I have a LARGE amount of invoices to send out yet. I will be posting a link to pay instead of sending out individual invoices. I need to get all these orders packed and shipped, individually invoicing is taking up way too much time.
